Tillsonburg Curling Club
The Tillsonburg Curling Club has been a sports’ fixture of Tillsonburg since 1954. At that time a group of community members and local farmers got together and formed a club where they bought shares for $100 and played their first games on arena ice. Very soon the club had moved into the building that we are still in today.
The club has always been a volunteer-based club: meaning that much of the work to keep the club going is done by volunteers and that is still true 67 years later. The only paid employees of the club are our ice technician, our bartenders and our cleaning staff. The club is administered by a Board of Directors who oversee everything about the club. Club volunteers run events like bonspiels (that’s a name for a curling tournament), leagues, special events, and even help to put in the ice and work in the kitchen when needed.
Two major club bonspiels started back in the 50’s, the Men’s Tobacco Belt Bonspiel which saw 65 years of competition originated from the sponsorship of McDonalds a major tobacco employer in the area at the time. The other long running bonspiel is the Community Service Bonspiel which will celebrate 66 years of continuous play except for Covid, with the same sponsor since its inception which is a major feat.
Curling is a sport for everyone and all ages. Tillsonburg Curling Club tries to offer something for everyone with Leagues for Juniors (8+), Seniors, Men, Mixed, Ladies, and a Recreational League which is ‘open’ meaning it could be men, women, or both. We have great ice, a good facility, though it’s not fancy, it has everything we need for a great curling experience especially the large viewing area to watch games and the lounge area to enjoy some social time after the game which is a key part of curling! The newest additions to the club are the wheelchair accessibility features which we’re hoping will bring some new community interest to the club.
